Retail Graphics Trends: What's In Demand For Pop-Ups?

Pop-up displays offer a highly effective way to drive brand awareness, engagement and sales within a retail environment.

Designed to be incredibly eye-catching to capture the attention of passing footfall, pop-up displays use every trick in the book to get shoppers to interact with brands in person.

Furthermore, when pop-up displays are shared or mentioned online, this creates user-generated content which can then boost the digital reach of the campaign. The ability to access audiences far beyond those who will physically see the display in-store can result in higher ROIs for retailers, making pop-ups a hugely successful format across the board.

Service Graphics is a leading UK designer and installer of retail graphics, including pop-up displays.

Wherever your brand will be ‘popping up’ this year in the form of a display or temporary concept store, here are some of the top trends to look out for to maximise your commercial objectives as a retailer.

What Are Pop Up Retail Displays?

Before we cover what’s trending in retail pop-up displays, here’s a quick recap for anyone new to this type of installation.

Pop-up retail displays can cover several creative solutions ranging from point of purchase (POP) displays to pop-up concept stores.

On the smaller end of the scale, point of purchase (POP) displays can be added to any part of an existing retail store, such as when creating a new in-store promotion. Alternatively, a pop up shop spans an entire premises (i.e. an empty retail unit) for a limited amount of time.

Whether opting for a modest installation or transforming an entire venue, pop up retail displays are designed to be temporary while driving maximum impact.

Some of the ways in which pop-up displays or stores can be used include:

  • Brand awareness campaigns
  • Brand collaborations
  • Company milestone events
  • Community engagement
  • Influencer events
  • Limited-time deals
  • Product launches
  • Product testing or market research
  • Product promotions
  • Seasonal displays

Now you’re familiar with pop-up displays in retail, let’s discover some of the top trends to make your next display count.

An Increasing Use Of AI Within Retail Displays

AI (artificial intelligence) is a hot topic as of late. Though it’s fair to say that automation has been a staple within the retail industry for some time now, with self-service checkouts being a notable example.

So what’s new? Well, AI is going to be used increasingly within retail stores including pop-up displays to improve the customer experience.

Some AI features to look out for include virtual assistants, personalised product recommendations and the ability for retailers to create data-driven insights based on customer interactions.

For example, imagine that a skincare brand creates a pop-up display within a department store. The stand uses AI to analyse customers' faces to determine suitable product recommendations. Customers can then purchase these products directly from the stand, or have the product list emailed to them to capture sales at a later date.

Interactive Displays Use To Drive Social Engagement

It’s a given that in-store displays including pop-up graphics or stores are designed to drive sales.

But an increasingly popular trend is for the displays to look to drive online and social engagement first, so that sales can eventually be generated as a result.

After all, there is a limited amount of footfall which may see a pop up display or store in person - even in the busiest of locations! But when that campaign is shared on social media, the reach can expand infinitely.

The recent global hype over the Barbie movie is one such example here, with a custom display installed in Covent Garden in collaboration with makeup brand NYX.

Bringing a slice of the California sunshine into the heart of London, the very purpose of the display was to get shoppers taking pictures and live video to boost sales for both the Barbie movie and NYX cosmetics.

Increased Direct To Consumer (DTC) Display Stands (POP)

Display stands give all brands a chance to create an impact through in-store marketing. This includes retail brands which only have an online presence but want to reach customers in person with physical demonstrations, product launches and awareness campaigns.

As retail businesses can rent a space within department stores, shopping centres or events, DTC display stands offer a desirable format to reach customers in real life.

These stands can be for the purpose of increasing social media reach. However, POP (point of purchase) temporary displays could also be installed for the brand to generate instant sales.

Compared with signing up for a long rental lease, display stands offer a cost effective method for brands to increase engagement and meet their customers in real life.

Sustainable Display Stands

Sustainability is a trend that’s here to stay across all industries, and pop up stand panels and displays are no exception.

Making pop up graphics sustainable is all about considering the lifecycle of the display. As well as avoiding printing time-sensitive information on the stands, the displays can be repurposed and eventually recycled to reduce waste.

Where possible, replacement pop up panels can be used to update the display stands or pop up stand panels instead of using all new materials from scratch. Looking beyond retail to events or exhibitions, replacement graphic panels can also be used to create or update an exhibition stand to be kinder on the planet.

Also, when creating pop up concept stores within retail units, the materials used can also be chosen to consider their environmental impact. Likewise, any digital displays installed in shops can be powered by renewable or other forms of green energy.

Pop Up Graphics FAQs

Interested in creating a pop-up display stand or pop-up store for your retail business? We’ve answered some of the most common questions below, but for anything else please contact the Service Graphics team.

A pop up display stand is a type of temporary display stand. It can include graphic panels which attach to a stand frame or feature another type of creative construction. In either case, pop up display stands are designed for temporary promotions whereby the aim is to create maximum impact within retail locations. Pop up display stands can also be repurposed for events and exhibitions.

In order to be effective, retail displays including pop up displays need a clever strategy behind the creatives and overall visual direction. There should be a clear sense of branding and an engaging use of colours, typography and overall functionality. Since it’s possible to integrate AI, experiential design and motion graphics into displays, there are limitless ways to grab attention. Our graphic designers and retail installers here at Service Graphics can offer tailored suggestions based on your commercial objectives as a retailer.

If you would like the ability to easily construct and deconstruct a pop-up display within just a couple of steps, we can provide various options to suit. Alternatively, for bespoke displays and concept store fitouts, our team can take care of the display installation and dismantling on your behalf.
